  5. Does the client require medical clearance before admission?

  6. Is a psychiatric assessment required before admission?

  7. Are there any exclusion criteria (medical complexity, aggression, eating disorders, dementia, developmental disability, etc.)?

When to Refer Directly to an Emergency Department

Advise clients (or arrange transport) to the nearest Emergency Department or call 911 if they are:

  • Actively suicidal with intent or plan

  • Actively homicidal

  • Experiencing psychosis with inability to maintain safety

  • Severely manic and unable to care for themselves

  • Medically unstable or requiring medical clearance

  • Intoxicated to the point that medical stabilization is needed

  • Unable to participate safely in an outpatient psychiatric assessment
